Opportunities
PhD & Postdoc Positions
We recruit funded PhD students and postdocs to work on key themes in multilingual NLP, reinforcement learning for healthcare, mental health modeling, and multimodal reasoning. In particular, we will recruit 1-2 PhD or postdoc to work on the FINe-Health Foundry project.
MSc Thesis
We welcome Master’s students who are looking for thesis opportunities in natural language processing and related fields to work with us. If you are enthusiastic about solving real-world challenges with NLP, particularly in the areas of multilingual and multimodal systems, or exploring societal impacts such as mental healthcare applications, consider joining our team.
What We Offer:
- Supervision and guidance from leading experts in NLP and AI.
- Access to state-of-the-art research tools, datasets, and computational resources.
- Opportunities to publish in high-impact venues and present at conferences.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be enrolled in a Master’s program at University of Turku, or at other Finnish universities subject to potential paperwork.
- Strong academic background in computer science, machine learning, natural language processing or a related field.
- Experience or coursework in natural language processing is preferred.
How to Apply:
- A brief description of your research interests and how they align with our work.
- Your CV and academic transcript.
Visiting Researchers
We welcome visiting researchers (postdoc, faculty, or Ph.D. students from other institutions) to collaborate with us for short-term or long-term research stays in our core research directions:
- Multilingual NLP & Reasoning: Researching methods to scale systems globally, including massively multilingual NLP, continual learning architectures to prevent catastrophic forgetting, reinforcement learning for alignment, and test-time compute scaling (inference-time search and verification).
- Clinical Intelligence & Health AI: Developing robust and interpretable models for clinical environments, including reinforcement learning for personalized care treatment paths, mental health monitoring and psychotherapy support, and multimodal pathology models integrating histopathology, text, and genomics.
- Multimodal AI & Reasoning: Designing architectures that integrate and reason across modalities, including vision-language models for complex documents and scenes, joint visual-textual multi-step reasoning, and evaluation/benchmarking for safety and factual consistency in real-world environments.
We Offer
- A stimulating and supportive research environment with access to state-of-the-art computational resources (e.g., GPUs, computing clusters).
- A dynamic working environment in collaboration with the ELLIS Institute Finland, the TurkuNLP research group, and other international partners.
- Opportunities for collaboration with leading researchers in AI, NLP and health domains.
- Participation in cutting-edge projects with real-world impact on healthcare.
There are some external funding opportunities that prospective students and researchers may explore, for example, the EDUFI Fellowship for doctoral researchers. If you have an external fellowship or self-support for your visit, we encourage you to reach out and explore potential collaborations.
